7 Dwarfs Mine Train vs Big Thunder Mountain Railroad

If you are short for time in the Magic Kingdom, it can be tough to select the few attractions you’ll want to wait in line for.

Seven Dwarfs Mine Train and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad are two of the most popular roller coasters in the park, and they are great for most of the family.

Keep reading as we put the two rides head to head to see which one you should visit on your next trip.

7 Dwarfs Mine Train

Are Seven Dwarfs Mine Train and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad The Same Ride?

These two attractions are so easily confused by guests, but they are located in separate parts of the park.

Seven Dwarfs Mine Train was part of the new Fantasyland expansion and is one of the newest rides in the park. It opened back in 2014, so it is much newer than Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, which has been operating in the Magic Kingdom since 1980.

In general, we find Seven Dwarfs Mine Train to be smoother, however, it has a unique rocking motion like nothing you’ve experienced before on a ride.

For that reason, some guests may find the motion more intense on this ride, even though it’s less clunky than Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.

Which Ride Has the Biggest Drop Seven Dwarfs Mine Train Or Thunder Mountain?

When it comes to the biggest thrill in the park, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is a little more intense.

Seven Dwarfs Mine Train has a 39 ft drop, whereas Big Thunder Mountain Railroad offers multiple drops and turns throughout the ride.

For that reason, if you are looking for a slightly more intense coaster with more twists and turns, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad would always be our top pick.

Lighting Lane Options For Seven Dwarfs Mine Train

As one of the newest rides in the park, Seven Dwarfs Mine Train consistently sees huge lines day after day.

In fact, if you don’t get here first thing in the morning or have a plan in place for riding, you’ll likely wait an hour or two during peak times.

We can’t believe this ride still attracts such huge crowds, especially considering the short length of the ride.

The good news is that with the recent addition of the Lightning Lane, things have changed when it comes to riding the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train.

This attraction is one of the two rides in the park which can be purchased separately.

It’s not included in Genie+, so you’ll need to fork out between $10-12 for the single ride.

Of course, for many guests, this is much better than queuing for a couple of hours. If you are willing to pay this for your whole family, we recommend taking a pass for the middle of the day.

You can use the morning to get on a few more rides and then enjoy Seven Dwarfs Mine Train when the park gets busier.

As far as Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, this is included in the Genie+ offerings.

This is a great value for money option for anyone looking to enjoy as many rides as possible in one day.

We recommend booking this as one of your first attractions of the day, as it’s more popular than some of the others on the list.

For just $15, you can enjoy up to 17 of the park’s attractions. Therefore, it’s probably much more cost-effective to do this ride along with many others in the park for one cost.

Here’s a YouTube video of how Disney’s Genie + system works.

How Long Is Each Ride?

One of the biggest criticisms about both of these rides is how short the actual attraction is after queueing for so long.

This is particularly true for Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, which lasts just two minutes and 50 seconds.

After queueing for so long, it can feel like it’s over in the blink of an eye. There’s so much detail in the ride, so you’ll feel like you want to ride again straight away to catch everything you missed.

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is no longer though, coming in at just about three minutes in length.

If you can find a time to ride this with a shorter line, you’ll find it offers a better use of your time in the park.

Which Ride is the Scariest or Most Fun Big Thunder or Seven Drafs?

The two rides offer quite different experiences, so it really depends on what you are looking for.

For die-hard Disney fans, you’ll find that Seven Dwarfs Mine Train offers a much more immersive experience.

It is themed after the classic film, and we all love the mine scene with the dwarfs!

The audio-animatronics are some of the best in the parks, and you’ll be blown away by the attention to detail.

The unique swinging motion is also very different from typical roller coasters, so that’s something else to keep in mind.

For thrill-seekers, we recommend Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. It has more drops, twists, and turns, meaning it’s more of a classic roller coaster experience.

Is Seven Dwarfs Mine Train Worth the Wait?

One of the most common questions we receive about this ride is whether it’s really worth the wait.

We believe every Disney fan should try it once, but you’ll want to use the Lightning Lane or get to the parks first thing in the morning ideally.

The ride is really short for a two-hour wait, which is typically what you can expect on a standard afternoon.

If it’s your only day in the park, we honestly think you are better offer enjoying many other rides. However, for visitors who have a few days here, you’ll find it’s well worth trying once.

Both attractions are worth riding at least once during your next Disney vacation where possible.

The addition of the Lightning Lane has made it easier once again to enjoy these rides, but you’ll want to plan ahead, so you don’t spend all day waiting in line.

Work with your family to choose the one that’s best for them based on whether they are looking for something fun or a little more thrilling.

You’ll find that you won’t be disappointed by either ride though, as they are two of the top rides in Walt Disney World.
