PortAventura theme park is one of Europe’s biggest recreational parks. It is located in the PortAventura World resort in Salou city, Spain. The park has been operational since 1995 and is under the management of The Tussauds Group, La Caixa, Anheuser-Busch, and FECSA.

Far West Theme Area: The theme for this area is based on an old west town. It features a total of nine attractions, among them western sculptures and buildings.

Mexico Theme Area: This area is greatly influenced by Mexican culture. It features Mexican monuments like the Great Piramide, statues, and temples.

Mediterrania Theme area: This theme area marks the entrance of the park. It comes with an assortment of entertainment facilities such as rides, restaurants, and shops.

China Theme Area: This is the biggest theme area in the park, and it represents the Chinese culture, especially the food. Here, you will enjoy a Chinese buffet complete with a variety of dishes.

Polynesia Theme Area: This theme area is laid back, so if you want to relax and not actively engage in activities, this would be the place for you. It is also comparatively small and not as thrilling as the other theme areas.

SesamoAventura Theme Area: Themed to sesame street characters, this area was constructed with the younger visitors in mind, that is, kids and teenagers.

Where is PortAventura?

PortAventura is part of the PortAventura World resort, which is in Catalonia, 85km southwest of Barcelona. It is located in the municipalities of Cambrils, Vila-Seca, and Salou, on the Costa Dorada.

The theme park is about an hour and 20 minutes from Barcelona, depending on the means of transport you are using. Speaking of which, you can get to the theme park using a variety of means.

Which Is the Nearest Airport to PortAventura Theme Park?

There are five airports that are conveniently close to the park. The nearest is Reus Airport (REU), which is only 5.86 kilometers from the park. You can literally see the park from the airport, and it only takes you about 15 minutes to get to the park from the airport.

Barcelona airport (BCN) is also pretty near the park as it is only 81.12 kilometers away, which is about an hour by road. Lleida Airport comes in third at 86.77 kilometers from the park, whereas Castellon Airport (CDT) is 134.11 kilometers away.

The fifth closest airport to the theme park is Girona airport (GRO), which is 161.44 kilometres away.

Other Means of Getting to The Park

Apart from planes, there are other means of transport that you can use to get to the PortAventura theme park. For one, you can get there via the A-7 if you are using a car.

If you are using a train from Catalonia, ride with the train on the R-17/ RT2, which is run by Rodalies de Catalunya. If you are coming from outside of Catalonia, board the Camp de Tarragona AVE by Renfe.

Similarly, there are bus companies that offer direct rides to the park.

If you are coming from Costa Dorada, you will get a ride through the bus company Plana any day of the week. Julia Travel provides bus rides for people coming from Barcelona.

Does PortAventura Close in Winter?

PortAventura is open for most of the year, every day of the week. It starts its operations in the mid-morning till evening. So, to answer the question, no, PortAventura does not close in winter.

Still, the best time to visit is during summer, between June and August. You can enjoy more facilities such as water slides and the beach breeze without worrying that you may catch a cold.

Is PortAventura Europe’s Biggest Theme Park?

While it is quite expansive, PortAventura is not the biggest theme park in Europe. The biggest park in Europe is Disneyland Park in Paris, France.

Other European theme parks that are bigger than PortAventura include Europa-park in Germany, Efteling in the Netherlands, Walt Disney Studios Park in Paris, France, and Tivoli Gardens in Denmark.

Even so, regionally speaking, PortAventura is the biggest theme park in the South of Europe.

How Big Is PortAventura?

PortAventura world sits on 119 hectares of land. Out of that, the theme park occupies 52 hectares. The park is made up of a mini-theme park, aquatic park, and a bunch of 4-star and 5-star hotels.

On top of that, it also harbors Ferrari Land, which was launched in 2017, as well as  and a convention center and an RV park. The expansivity of the park makes it one of the biggest not only in Europe but globally as well.

Does PortAventura Have a Water Park?

There is a water park in PortAventura- the Caribe Aquatic Park. The water park sits on an area of 50,000m2. It is at the heart of Costa Dorada and has pools and slides for visitors of all ages. Some of the popular slides are Barracuda, El Torrente, and King Khajuna, which is the tallest.
